WELCOME to the

EnglishHammered-L Mailing List

This is a list for the discussion of English hammered coins. The period that this list covers is from c.600 A.D. to 1662. While the title of the group is "English Hammered Coins" discussions of the hammered coinage of all of the British Isles is welcome since there is often an interrelationship between them. Any and all aspects of collecting this series is up for discussion including but not limited to; research help, news, your collection, coins shows, want lists, etc. If you are interested in medieval coins from other countries or ancient coins please consider joining Moneta-L.

My name is Timothy Cook. I'm the "owner" of this list. That means I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and setting some rules for its operation. The following are a few simple guidelines that will help you on the list.

Your responsibilities.

That's right, you have some responsibilities, too. A mail list isn't like a movie, where you just buy a ticket, get entertained (sometimes) then walk away. This is a cooperative effort.

1. Bookmark this page. I recommend printing it and putting the paper where you can find it. Files on a hard disk get lost (as if paper doesn't, but...)

2. Read this page. Yes, it's a little long, but you don't have to  memorize it (that's why you're saving it). It's hard to make it short and tell you what you need to know.

3. Don't be afraid of all this. Using a computer is a little harder than just knowing where the power switch is, but anyone can do this with a little effort and by following instructions.

4. Follow instructions - to the letter. If you leave something out of a command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.

5. If you decide to leave the list, make sure your name is removed (more on this below).

6. Remember two email addresses:

7. DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES) ON THE LIST. IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST!!!!

8. Please stay on topic. Just below is a description about what this list is for. Please stay close to that subject. (Keep in mind that history is an important part of numismatics. Current non numismatic topics usually are not.) Do not post virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, personal messages, etc. For information on virus hoaxes and urban legends see <http://www.kumite.com/myths/> among others. And please sign all messages, it is kind of nice to know who we are communicating with.

9. Most e-mail programs can send attachments (attached files). Don't send these to the list. (Some programs will send a small attachment with your signature or something like that and you can't shut that off; that's okay.)

Please note that the Yahoogroups server automatically removes attachments of any kind. This is a safety measure to ensure that the emails that you receive from the list are virus free. It also makes it impossible to send images to the list. If you want people to look at a coin, you will have to provide a URL in your message.*

What is this list?

This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in English hammered coins. Please do not be embarrassed to ask any questions here. All of us at one time were new to both numismatics and computers. The only way you will ever learn is to ask.

What is allowed?
Almost anything as long as it is related to English hammered coinage or medieval history. This is your list and I want you to enjoy it. A few examples (but not limited to) of topics might include;

   * Attribution help.
   * Technical tidbits and advice.
   * History as it relates to coins.
   * Web site update notifications, not related to sales.
   * Personal anecdotes about your collecting passions.
   * Advice about buying, selling, and using the online auctions.
   * Medieval history in general.

Sales Announcements.
Please remember that this is a noncommercial mailing list. It is intended for collectors, researchers, dealers and others to have a place to discuss English hammered coinage. Limited commercial postings are allowed, but sellers are encouraged to keep the number of announcements to a maximum of once a month. Please put $$$ or £££ in the subject line so list members know that your message is a sales announcement. However, announcements for coin sales on eBay and similar venues are not allowed but book sales are allowed. Sorry folks. I encourage eBay sellers to use the list, The Ancient Coin Market (ACM), which has a larger and more focused audience. Like EnglishHammered-L, ACM is a free service. See the ACM-L FAQ for more information.* These are the same rules that are on Moneta-L and it seems to have worked there.

I don't like what some people say on the list!

The list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically bounced back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want to stifle free discussion, as list owner I reserve the right to step in if a flame war erupts, if some thread (a series of messages on the same subject) becomes tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly (use of profanity, for instance). Abuse of this list and its members could result in either permanent or temporary expulsion.

The most important key on your keyboard is the DELETE key. If you don't like a message, delete it. Don't send a cutting or snide remark back to the list. The rest of us don't want to read it, and it just adds to the clutter of useless messages. If you feel there is a serious problem caused by someone, send me a message at englishhammered-owner@yahoogroups.com.

If you have a personal message for someone, please send it to their address, not the list server address. Any mail sent to englishhamered@yahoogroups.com will automatically be sent to everyone on the list.

Other nifty options.

Calendar
If you have an event or know of one that may be of interest to other list members, feel free to post it on our Calendar. The calendar is open to all members. You will have to go to http://www.yahoogroups.com/, and select the User Center to access it.

Shared disk space
Yahoogroups graciously provides up to 5 megabytes of disk space that may be used for shared images.

What are shared images? The best way to explain would be with an example. Let us say that you have a coin that you need help with and you have an image, but you do not have a place on the Internet that you can point people to to see it. You can upload the image to our Yahoogroups 'shared' space for all to see. Instructions on doing this can be found at: http://www.yahoogroups.com/help/topfaq.html#10 .

Please be sure to keep the image size as small and as reasonable as possible since we only have 5 meg to play with. Also images may be purged after 30 days (less if the shared space is very active).*

Are the messages archived (saved) somewhere?

Yes there are archives of all messages posted to this list since it  was started. To access these archives go to this URL: http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/englishhammered. There you will find instructions on how to access the archives.

How soon should I get an answer?

When you send a message to the list, you will get a copy back (since you're a subscriber, too). Depending on a lot of factors, you may get an answer in 5 minutes or 5 hours, sometimes even longer. We may be very busy here. Sometimes **your** service rejects messages for awhile. GENERALLY, if you don't have an answer in 12 hours, suspect a problem and try again.

Help I'm having a problem!

Send me a message, but be specific. I can't help if you just say, "I'm having a problem, help me." Tell me what it is. Tell me what you did or tried to do. If you received some kind of error message, send it to me. If you get an error message it will tell you what the error is. You get a "bad command" error. Check you spelling. I see  "unscribe", "un-scibe" and about every other variation  imaginable. You have to spell stuff right!

I need more help.

E-mail englishhammered-owner@yahoogroups.com with your request and I will do my best to get what help you need.

Last thoughts.

Spread the word around. The more members we have, the better the discussions will be. If you like, links on your home pages or online auctions are most welcome. You may freely copy the list banner and use it to "advertise" this list. Please let me know if you do use it as I would love to see it. If you are artistically inclined and can create a better banner please let me know. Above all else get involved.

Disclaimer, please read.

Since this is an un-moderated list, the list owner of EnglishHammered-L does not warrant the contents of any message included in the list. All users are urged to exercise the same caution as you would approaching anything available on the Internet. Parents are strongly urged to monitor their children's usage.*

Have fun!!
